The Importance of Hobbies
April 2022
By Jorge Sotelo
Hobbies are important to have in your own life. In my own life I personally have hobbies that are music and art-related. Most people have hobbies too. Those may be such as art, sports, and many more.
Hobbies most of the time make up a person's personality. Hobbies define how a person sees the world. In a survey I conducted, many people preferred music and sports as hobbies, but many other options for hobbies were discussed as well. That really puts into perspective what people do in their free time. For myself, my hobbies define me. I like art, music, and things that have to do with creativity.
To see how people saw hobbies I interviewed two students from Pecos High School: Lucas Varela and Mayra Cisneros. When asked what type of hobbies they liked, they both answered that they preferred activities that were both time consuming and made time fly by. I think these students had very insightful responses because I too enjoy hobbies that don’t rely on me looking at the clock.
As with most things, there are always positives and negatives. For example, in the same survey I conducted, 77 percent of people said that there can be negative hobbies. Some of these hobbies they listed were hoarding, gambling, and drugs. The remaining percentage of students said that they weren’t sure or that they didn’t know.
How can hobbies affect us? It really depends on the environment you’re in, and what type of hobbies you have. For instance, art and sports in a lower-income environments can definitely impact you in a positive way. In the same survey I conducted, sports were a big part of many student’s routines. Over 50 percent of students enjoyed sports over art and others. In our community, you can really see that students prosper and flourish in athletic environments. We have a way of providing a good opportunity to getting rid of the negative influences.
What is your favorite hobby? Do you think it’s negative or positive? Do you and your friends, family and colleagues have similar hobbies? Are YOU open to finding new hobbies? I think we all have hobbies that we can share and enjoy with others in our lives.

Hunting
By Angelique Olonia
As you hike through the mountains, you spot a buck. He’s a big one. You stalk until you get a clear view of him broadside. You pick up your rifle and brace it up on your shoulder, then align the crosshairs right behind his shoulder. As you pull the trigger you feel the kick of your rifle being absorbed by your body, but it doesn't faze you; your adrenaline is pumping like a freight train. He’s down. Now the real work begins.
An interview previously conducted shows how much hunting means to the people in the Pecos area. Each of the interviewees were asked the same question, and each had a unique answer.
First up was Danny Flores. The first question that was asked was, “Is there a rewarding part of hunting for you, and if so what is it?”
“Of course hunting is rewarding for me, with a successful hunt comes a full freezer and a proud family. Hunting is my way of escaping the responsibilities of normal life and getting closer to nature,” stated Flores.
Next was Robert Varela. The question asked this time was different: “How long have you been hunting, and if someone taught you, who was it?”
“I have been hunting for as long as I can remember, since I was a little boy. My dad taught me how to hunt,” said Varela.
The last interviewee, EJ Varela, was asked, “Why do you hunt? Is there a deeper meaning behind your reasoning for it?”
“I hunt to fill my freezer, enjoy the hunt, to keep a family tradition alive and to teach my sons and daughter to learn to love the hunt. I would say the deeper reason behind my love for the hunt is my kids, to teach them how to provide for themselves and their future families, and to keep tradition alive,” stated Varela contently.
In a survey conducted, 96% of those surveyed answered that they hunt to provide food for their families, the other 4% answered that they hunt specifically for sport. When hunting for sport, the hunter usually either sells or donates the meat so it's not wasted. Then there are the hunters that just hunt for the trophy, the horns. A lot of hunters choose to keep and pack out the meat to keep for themselves, and even give some meat to family and friends.
The process of hunting, killing, and processing the animal is a long one. Processing the animal is a whole lot of work. Whether the hunter packs out the animal by hand or by horseback. Then there are some hunters that are lucky enough to be able to drive up to their kill and load it straight into their vehicle. When packing out the animal, you sometimes need to gut, skin, and quarter it in the field. When gutting the animal, you need to make sure you don't pop the stomach, because if you do, you risk ruining and losing the meat. Some people want their meat processed differently, some want it all deboned and ground, then there's some that want all the steaks and the backstraps.
Many people honor their harvest by mounting the head of the animal, whether that's by a European mount, which is just the skull. Or a shoulder mount, which has the animals hide and or rack, this looks as if the animal was alive. Most of the time they come out very nice, and are a very beautiful tribute to the animal.
To be a hunter takes a lot of hard work, will, and many other qualities. The most important may be the ability to deal with a whole lot of blood. As hunters, we deal with and see a whole lot of blood, whether that’d be an accident with yourself or a fellow hunter, or your downed animal.
When hunting your first animal, there's a rush like nothing else you’ve ever felt. A mix of adrenaline, sweat, and will, will get you either an animal, or a phenomenal sense of pride in yourself. Whether you are successful or not, it's a rush and at the end, you are proud of how much you pushed yourself. Hunting is an amazing experience for anybody that loves the outdoors.

Gaming in Different Ways
May 2021
By Felicia Pacheco
Now this is not going to be an article talking about gaming in general or a certain type of console, this is going to be an article about the people who play these games. There have always been different generalizations around gaming. Each is really harmful to everyone that is affected but I think there are two main groups that receive more of the harm than the others. When they are women gaming and members of the LGBTQ+ playing video games. Every game has those types of players that are literally just jerks to those around them but for some weird reason when they are a woman they get misogynistic comments and then it’s even worse for members of the LGBTQ+ community because they get called slurs. It gets even worse, because lots are a part of the LGBTQ+ community and it's just double if you are a woman, especially a woman of color. This is going to go on to tell just how harmful most of this is.
Let me give you a quick and sad statistic: there are two top female streamers/gamers in the world, Valkyrae and Pokimane, again THE top female gamers/streamers in the world. Yet their overall ranking in this industry is 27th and 98th. On top of that, Valkyrae, the biggest female streamer in the world is a woman of color, she has recently talked about how different it is especially compared to her male counterparts. But why? That’s one question I always ask, is it because the community of gaming was built off of toxicity or because people are just jerks? Either way, this needs to change, this toxicity is getting quite annoying. Members of the LGBTQ+ community and women being scared to talk in a game that literally requires comms, why? Because no matter what they are going to get hate, hate that is undeserving and makes the people seem like little kids with no respect or human decency.
For this article I interviewed a few people who I knew played games and I can get a very honest opinion from them. The question, “Why do you think women are disliked in gaming?” was asked. With a simple response of, “Pure misogyny. From what I can see, most hate comments towards women streamers and gamers are often things like "go make me a sandwich" or "do my laundry." I firmly believe women are capable of doing so much more than men, I say this as a man.” All I have to say is they are 100% right, as a girl who every once and a while I dislike talking in any lobbies because of the misogynistic comments I will get. Having to censor myself so I do not get these comments bother me, I simply want to enjoy a game and not get harassed over it, but it happens. Worst of all is, it's always from “the boys” who think they are the best, and it’s just annoying at this point. Also if you are reading this saying to “just mute them,” do you really think it will stop? It’s not as simple as you think and in all honesty is setting up the gaming industry for a downfall.
This not only happens to female gamers but members of the LGBTQ+ community. Thankfully most decide to not tell a stranger their sexuality or their preferred pronouns but they are still discriminated against with the use of a slur. The slur is used as a derogatory term and was used in the past against gays. For some reason in the gaming community it is used a lot, which led to it being “normalized” for the gaming community. Well now that more members are openly coming out and enjoying gaming/streaming games, it has become and denounced as it should be in the gaming world. Also since this is happening, lots of gaming influencers have openly embraced their sexuality and are glad to see so many look up to them. For example a streamer named Sydeon, aka Sydney, is an openly bisexual woman of color, she is a great example in the gaming community that things are changing. Woman and LGBTQ+ are more open with who they are and what they like to do, and that’s gaming. More and more we see more people talking about the effects and the toxicity, I just hope this keeps getting brought up and addressed, because this community needs a change.
This article was not written to hate on the gaming community for hating on women and LGBTQ+ (not opposed to hating on it though) but to inform the gaming community that does not experience this, the continuous hate these communities get. This industry is simply tiring and annoying, yet we are not going to give up something we love because someone thinks they are better because of their gender or sexual preference/orientation. Seeing women, women of color, and members of LGBTQ+ leading the industry in so many ways has opened many doors for many communities. The harmful things that are said to another person sticks to a person, especially if you are being a jerk for someone simply wanting to play a game, simply grow up, please.

Do you think that having an E-sports team as a school sponsored sport should happen, or should it stay as a club like any other club outside of school hours. I think personally that E-sports would be a good addition to Pecos High School because not only will we be competing and having fun against other schools, but we will be able to socialize more and hang out with our friends so we do not fail in other classes.
In Pecos High School we do not have anything related to E-sports. I think that we should have an E-sports team at our school that should feature some of the people that are really interested in playing E-sports. It would especially be amazing because we are in the midst of Covid, and we do not really get to do a lot of outside activities or do a lot of sports, so having an E-sports team would be something to really look forward to in the future.
Most of the people that I interviewed did say that they have played video games before and have had a lot of fun playing with them. In one interview one person said that they had almost as much fun as they had playing real sports. Half of the people that I interviewed said they would be interested in doing E-sports, or at least try it. The website that I was looking at said that there is no state that recognizes E-sports as an actual school sponsored sport.
I was hoping Pecos could get an E-sports team or an operator for it so that we can have fun and compete against other schools and show how Pecos is good at a wide variety of sports. All the websites that I checked out said that we would have to contact whoever ran the E-sports and see if we can get our school in the tournaments or any of the games that they play. There is a variety of games that anyone in our school can like, so it would be a good thing to bring them here.
If I were you, I would want to support the kids that want to do this because the pros make a lot of money. Even if none of us go pro (because there is a small chance that individuals can go pro), I still want all of us to have fun like an actual sport. If we can just find someone in our school that will help us operate it and be our so-called “coach” that would help us a lot.

My Inspiration: Markiplier
Viktoriano Quintana
Who are the people that inspire you? To me, one of my biggest inspirations is the man Mark Fischbach! Mainly known as the popular gamer, Markiplier, does way more than just make YouTube videos. He gives back to the community in many different ways, no matter big or small. He also inspires others to do their best in anything and everything they do. Mark is as honest and straightforward as he can be, to not only his community but to himself. How much could a person who plays video games for a living, really do for others? You might be surprised by how much he’s actually done, and is still doing today.
Markiplier is known for playing video game walkthroughs and for playing a numerous amount of horror games. Mark is a hilarious, caring, encouraging, dedicated, big hearted guy, that’s just an all-around amazing human being. He began his career in 2012 when he posted his first ever YouTube video. Still today, he is making videos and is working on big projects that he has always wanted to do. He’s still going strong and came such a long way, going through all the obstacles that were thrown in his way.
Mark is currently 31-years-old and has gained over 28 million subscribers since he first began his channel. He had also gained a huge caring community and made so many friends along the way. Ever since he started to become known in the gaming community, Mark decided that he wanted to give back in some way. Then in 2017, Mark announced that he was going to start doing monthly charity livestreams and will donate to the charity of his choosing. He has raised money for over 40 different charities! And some of those charities have been, but are not limited to the Human Rights Campaign, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance, Best Friends Animal Society, AbleGamers, and Cancer Research.
The last charity on that list is actually really important to him. Not that all the other ones aren’t as important, it’s just that he has had an “experience” with cancer you could say. By that, I mean there was someone in his life who has passed away from cancer, and that person was his father. In 2007, his father Cliffton Fischbach was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer. Then tragically, on July 4th 2008, Mark's father passed away after a year long battle with cancer. To Mark, he has proclaimed his father as his greatest hero. When something is really important to Mark, he will do his best to reach the goals he sets out for. He will set a goal, do whatever he can to reach the end, and won’t stop till the goal is complete.
To me, a majority of the things that Mark does are for a good reason or cause. He encourages others to do their best and to do the most they can within the time they have, because you don’t know when you may not be able to. He inspires me in many ways and I was curious to know how he also inspires others, because we’re all different and have our own reasons. So I did some interviews and asked questions like, “If you knew who he was and knew about the things he’s done, would you consider him as a person who inspires you and if so, in what ways?” Then the interviewee, Felicia Pacheco responded with, “Yes I would. He always talked about his childhood and how he was poor (in a joking way) but he rose to fame from just being himself. And that shows a lot considering that he’s always been himself, so yes he is inspiring.”
Him being himself, and not changing for others, shows that you don’t need to be like everyone else and you can be yourself--be the one that stands out in the crowd. He wants everyone to be who they are, don’t be afraid to let your true colors shine! With that said, he also wants his actions to be worth something and to be meaningful to whoever he may be helping, and asks for nothing in return. One of his famous quotes is “I want to live in a world where every person gives far more than they take.” That just makes you think about how the world is and that it could change if everyone was like that-then how would it be?
With all the different things he’s done for the community, he also has ways how he can inspire people emotionally. Mark encourages people to continue with everything they do and to keep going, without the thought of giving up. He believed that if you set a goal or set your mind to something, you will get it done and you will accomplish that goal because you won’t give up. Just like how he sets goals when he is trying to help others, he wont stop till that goal is reached. “Whatever you do, be it small, big; have a goal and believe in yourself,” is also another one of his quotes that gives someone that reason to keep going.
There have been people who were going through or went through a rough time and found Mark just at the right time. They’ve said that he has actually helped them get through it. To some people, he is used as a source of comfort or as a distraction to get their mind off things. He may not be there physically, but hearing his voice or his laugh just makes people happy. Going back to the interviews, one of the other questions I asked was “Because of the things that he does, can you say that he has changed some people’s lives?” Aleah Tanuz responded, “Yeah, he has changed lives. He seems to be putting out positive messages and is helping others by doing the things he loves to do.”
He has helped people change some of their choices in life, and he may not even know it. He himself has even said that his community has saved him, and has made his life so much better. Mark is doing a whole lot for thousands or even millions of people just by being his amazing self! He’s had his ups and downs, struggled with some things, and had some tough times that he’s gone through. Mark is just like all the rest of us; we all go through things in our life and need to take breaks--we're human! Then when those times come around, he lets his community know that something has happened and he will be gone for a while. Then when he talks about the situation, Mark will be as real and straightforward as he can be.
After hearing about some of the things Markiplier has done to help, would you consider wanting to learn more about him? I conducted a survey asking ten people, Do you think you would be interested in knowing more about Markiplier and what he does?” All who were asked responded enthusiastically, “Yes, I would!”
From the things that he’s done and is still doing, it will be remembered by everyone that has been helped in different ways. It could have helped them physically, emotionally, or perhaps even changed their lives. He finds ways to help, sets goals, and pursues those goals till they are accomplished. Encouraging others to do what they can within the time they have shows people they can do whatever they set their minds to. As stated by the man himself, “What I do is temporary, but what I leave behind is forever.”

Based on Your Star
By Aleah Tanuz
How well do you know your horoscope? Well in this article, you will be getting a look at what three 10th grade students who were interviewed had to say, as well as a survey with 12 random students all going to Pecos High school had to say on this topic. There are many different opinions about this topic but, one thing goes to show that each person is either interested in wanting to know more, or not interested in learning more about themselves based on their star.
With regard to horoscopes, everyone has their own beliefs. In an interview that was conducted with student Ashley Rodriguez, she was asked if she believes in horoscopes and what they say about her based on her birthday. “I do believe in my horoscope I believe somethings are not true.” Another student who would like to remain anonymous said “Well Yes, I do believe what they say about me.” These two had their own opinions which led to the following question in a survey with 12 random students who were asked: What is your opinion on horoscopes? There were all different answers from one saying that they thought they were cool, and stating that some people do follow the attributes related to their birth day, to another thinking they can be a good thing and other times they can seem phony.
With a wide variety of things to learn about your birthdays, I was interested in knowing how well these three matched their horoscope read to them out of a horoscope book, based on their birthday and how it related to them as an individual person. First up was Ashley. She responded by saying “Yes, in some aspects some things hit the spot and some things are questionable.” As for the person that would like to remain anonymous they said “ Yes, I think very much so it was 100% spot on.” There was also one more person interviewed: Angelique Olonia. She responded with “Some aspects do match”. All in a way saying that they had some to all things read about them match. Many more are interested in learning more about their sign and birthday. Out of the 12, 10 said "yes" and the last 2 said "a little." After reading the characteristics of their birthdays, the same individuals were asked if they found anything that surprised them. Anonymous said, “The thing that surprised me was that the jobs which gave the variety of show business and politics were spot on.” Ms.Rodriguez said “The thing I was surprised about were earth and my colors, which were silver, indigo, and dark violet. As well as my meditation quote which warmed my heart.” Lastly, Ms. Olonia was asked the same question, and she responded with “I was surprised to learn how accurate it is and how much it relates to me.”
Having things that pertain to each sign is something that was asked in both interviews and a survey. Both groups were asked if they knew that each sign has one of the four elements that represents them. Each were asked to guess what they thought each of theirs were. From the 12 students 4 guessed Earth, 2 guessed Fire, 1 guessed Air, and 3 guessed Water. From the three that were interviewed, Ashley said Earth, Angelique guessed Earth as well, and lastly Anonymous said Water. This is something that is really interesting to learn more about. The last question that was asked was if they knew their sign and the symbol of their constellation. All three respondents knew theirs and, as for the survey, 11 individuals knew what theirs were, and one did not know at all.
To say that people have their own opinion is an understatement because people have their own beliefs and interests as you can tell from the article. From guessing what they thought their signs element is, to just knowing what their sign is. From some getting to learn about what jobs fit them based on their birthday, to what their birth element is, are just some of the few things that there are to learn about you and your horoscope. *
Hobbies: Did you develop any during Quarantine?
By Lauren Vigil
Many new hobbies have started since the pandemic started. Do you think hobbies are a good thing?
People have been staying home because of Covid-19. New hobbies have been started for teens. The most popular hobbies consist of exercising (running, walking, workout videos), chatting with friends over facetime or on the phone, and drawing and painting. The hobbies now are either indoor or outdoor. When a group of Pecos High students were asked “Are your hobbies indoor or outdoor?” Out of seven people 28.6% said outdoor, 57.1% said indoor and 14.3% said none.
Do hobbies help with mental help? The answer to that question is yes! Hobbies help you stay busy and keep your stress levels low. Drawing and painting can help you relax. In the same survey taken by a group of students, one said they have been drawing and another said they have started Diamond Art. Exercising is another hobby that can help your anxiety; It helps reduce stress. When we had to start quarantine I had seen that lots of people had been doing workouts on social media to keep them busy. An interview was conducted with Sophomore Lorenzo Ortega, the question asked was “Do you think exercising is considered a hobby? ''He answered with “Yes I do”.
Should people consider having a hobby? Hobbies can teach you many new things. Hobbies can lead you to a passion you had no idea about. People may think they are a waste of time, but you are able to experience new things. Another reason people don’t think hobbies are a good thing is because they take up to much time. That is not necessarily true because they can take as much time as you desire. Student Lorenzo Ortega stated, “Hobbies are beneficial”.
Should hobbies be fun? Hobbies are supposed to attract your attention and seem like something you would really like to do. If you do not think the hobby attracts your attention then maybe you should consider changing it. Ortega also noted that hobbies are intended to be fun. I think many other people would agree with that answer. Hobbies should make you happy and not stressed. When you start a hobby you should do it with someone who makes you happy and makes you laugh.
New hobbies are a good thing for you. They keep you busy and help you not worry about what’s going on with Covid-19. Try a new hobby--it can either change your life or keep it the same!
Picture a new hobby
By Ashley Rodriguez
Many people think that photography is a job that only hipsters do but, in reality, it can be both a job and a hobby that anyone can do. Photography is the art or practice of taking and processing photographs and a hobby is an activity done regularly in one's leisure time for pleasure. Photography can be a relaxing hobby if you are willing to try it. Let’s picture a new hobby and let's discuss the importance of hobbies. Why you should try photography as a hobby and what materials do you need for photography? I also conducted two interviews and a surveyed nine students to gather information on why you should consider trying photography as a hobby.
Why is having a hobby important? Having a hobby allows you to destress and unwind. Also, having a hobby lowers blood pressure and promotes better mental health. I asked an anonymous peer, “Do hobbies relax you?” This individual responded, ”Yes, I think that taking pictures does relax me because I like to take pictures especially in the afternoons when the sun sets or when the sun starts going down. And I get to sit outside and take pictures of the beautiful sunsets. I think it is really calming.” I also questioned another peer who wishes to be anonymous the same question and she responded, ”Yes, they do. They do relax me.” I petitioned a survey to my fellow peers and one of the questions was,” Do you like hobbies?” The results were as expected: 77.78% of the participants selected said "yes," and 22.22% said "somewhat."
Why should you try photography as a hobby? Photography is a relaxing hobby because you can capture memories and moments in your life or the environment. I asked both of the anonymous students the following question: ”If you had a chance would you like to try photography as a hobby?” The first student replied,” Yes, I would love to. That would be great. I always liked the thought of capturing the image and like…. I don’t know just something special like that. I would always like to take pictures of people because I know that sometimes a picture can make a difference. It makes someone feel pretty and not that you need a picture but I always think that it helps.” The second student stated, ”Yes, I would like to do photography as a hobby because I find photography really fun. Especially when you have good things to take pictures of and by things, I mean environment, places, or animals out in the wild or something. Or like what I said, hunt pictures because I think they come out really really good.” Both students responded "yes," and both wanted to capture a moment for entertainment. The same question was also placed into the survey and the results were mostly the same: 66.67% said "Yes," and 33.33% said "Maybe," which means that many people would try photography if they had a chance to.
If you had a chance would you try photography what materials will you need? Surprisingly, many people don’t know what you need for this hobby and profession. I asked both anonymous students the question, “Do you know what materials you need for photography?”. The first student responded with, ”I will personally use my phone but I looked into it. You need a lens and a certain type of camera. There is a lot that you have to do but what I use for my materials is basically make sure I have a nice scenery, a clean camera, and then I capture the image.” The second student answered, "I do not know what materials you would need but what I would think you do need will just be a really good photography camera and possibly a stand when you are doing some sort of type of photography. Like if you're trying to take pictures of an environment or something for a very long period of time. It takes pictures and at least that is it.”
The survey results also showed the same answers 88.89% said somewhat and 11.11% said a little. All you need to do is find your inspiration, invest into a good camera, take your time and you have an option for photography classes. The next question I asked the unnamed students was, “Do you know how much photography classes are?” The first student responded with, ”No, I don't. I am guessing if I had to guess I say about $100 to $200. Because you need to learn how to use the equipment and the people who teach the classes are really professional and they are really good at it. So, I would say that they are pretty expensive. Well, I guess YouTube has a tutorial I guess. ”The second student retorted with, "I have no idea how much photography classes are. Possibly expensive….maybe…. I don't know.” I also surveyed the same question and the results were surprising. 100% said "No." Then the next question on the survey was, “How much would you guess the classes will be?” 7 students answered this question. The amount guessed was between $30 to $300 but the correct amount is $79 to $250. But as the first student mentioned, YouTube can also be an option.
To wrap up this article, You should try photography as a hobby. Hobbies are important because they allow you to destress and unwind and having a hobby lowers blood pressure and promotes better mental health. And learning photography as a hobby allows you to capture moments in your life or the life around you. Also, all you need to do is find your inspiration, invest into a good camera, take your time and you have an option for photography classes. Photography classes are $79 to $250, but you can also watch a YouTube tutorial for free. Both options help dive you into having Photography as a hobby. Can you picture trying photography as a hobby?

Looking for something to do during quarantine? You, along with many other people!
If you’re in need of things to do, I have many ideas…
Cooking and baking are good ways to pass time, as well as keep your mind off of this worldwide pandemic. A really good website I’ve found which is great to use if you’re cooking or baking is https://www.supercook.com/#/recipes; this site allows you select all the ingredients you have in your household and it gives you multiple recipes for what you could make with all the things you already have.
If you’re not the baking type, and you like to relax and watch movies, I also know a website for that: https://myflixer.to/ has a wide selection of TV shows and movies. There are no signup fees required for this website. All you need to do is search up the exact name of what you want to watch and it will show up. Happy Bingeing!
